The report, a tribute the men of the “Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male”, highlights the deliberations and interactions that took place during the VARG / South African Medical Research Council Imbizo as a prelude to the Standard of Care Summit in Cape Town, South Africa, from the 31st October to the 1st November 2017. It also situates the VARG as a critical vehicle that influenced the decision by the HIV Vaccine Trial’s Network to offer Pre Exposure Prophylaxis to all trial participants who request it as part of a rights based standard of care - a foundational moment in the young history of the VARG.
